If you would want to draw a rectangle around it, in which the axe fits, these are the measurements. With a simple desktop ruler you can measure it's dimensions. The drawing does not really seem to match the picture, either. OK, the picture is sideways and the drawing from the top, but the cutting edge looks to have a distinct bevel and the spike in the drawing seems less wide. The decorations however would make it an expensive piece, then and now. I wonder if these were chiseled hot or filed and ground. Perhaps both, as the "rings" seem pretty uniform. Would have taken ages to make, as the decorations filled with niello are quite deep. Where does the silvering go? |
