Corbridge type Segmentata hinges cast or folded sheet? - Anonymous - 03-15-2004

A very brief question are original segmentata shoulder plate hinges cast and drilled for the hinge pin or are they made from thin sheet folded double or possibly thick sheet with just the hinge loops folded? I have come up with lots of pictures and diagrams but none show conclusively the nature of the hinge construction.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
They are made of thin brass sheet (about 6mm) folded double completely. Most reconstructions are made with thicker material for more strength.
The brass of the originals seem to be stronger than our of the shelf hobby brass. It was probably also heat treated to make it harder.
Lorica hinges - Matthew Amt - 03-15-2004

Avete!
Jurgen, I hope you meant 0.6 mm, not 6 mm! (That'd be a heck of a hinge!)

But otherwise, yes, all the originals are a double thickness, with the hinge tubes at the fold. You can see more about hinge construction on the Legio XX Lorica page,

Heating brass and quenching it will soften it. It is hardened by working or hammering. Roman brass had less zinc in it than modern yellow brass, usually, so that might make a difference in the strength, too.
I've started casting sheet hinges, cast flat in a mold then folded.

Very little wasted materials or filing.
Many thanks for the constructive advice, very much appreciated. I hope that this will enable me to build a more accurate Lorica Segmentata for my collection.
Not being a member of a re-enactment group just a collector, makes it difficult to identify and source the various bits and pieces especially those darned stamped washers!
Wait a minute, he said "length", not height. What exactly was he talking about? Maybe you want to stay away from Jurgen Matt...
Magnus/Matt
