Re: Concesti helmet - aitor iriarte - 03-02-2004

Hi Alain,
I've got the scanty information published on Hans Klumbach's 'Spätrömische Gardehelme'. Good B&W photos are also on the book. The cheek-pieces are heavily damaged and nasal and neckguard, totally missing. We must also suppose that the two narrow side bands for the concealment of the cheek hinges were also once present.
One interesting feature of this helmet is that the neckguard seems to have been attached to the base ring by means of two hinges, instead of the usual leather straps. This helmet, like the rest of the group, would deserve a deeper study. You can find it at St Petersbourg Hermitage Museum!
By the way, would you be able to locate at some Asiatic food supermarket some bottles of the Tiparos Thai fish sauce? Its the better modern equivalent to medium quality garum!
Thanks Aïtor,
Is it possible to get some pics from Klumbach book ?
Concerning the Chinese modern Garum I think I'll be able to find some.

Cheers,
Re: Concesti helmet - aitor iriarte - 03-03-2004

Well Alain,
By this time you'll have before your eyes the pics that Robert has sent (I've usually got my scanner stored away due to lack of space on my working board. Unfortunately, I've got little or no time to connect it again now and for some time! )
The pics on Klumbach's book are excellent, but I've always missed colour photos of all the helmets. I've got those of Deurne, Berkasovo I and Budapest helmets but, what does the text exactly mean when it says that the Conçesti helmet is 'parcel gilt'?
Ah, the fish sauce of Tiparos brand is not Chinese, it comes from Thailand (there is a similar sauce from Vietnam, called nuoc mam)
Aïtor, I'm also interested by pics of the Budapest helms if you cannot do this now, no problem, I can wait.

Cheers,
Re: Concesti helmet - John Conyard - 11-14-2009

I needs as much as possible on this helmet, as soon as possible.

Could Robert or anybody else send me what they have via [email protected] or via www.comitatus.net

Photos, measurements etc.

It could be one of our new cavalry helmets for next year.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Concesti helmet - Robert Vermaat - 11-17-2009

I just sent you the pictures that I have.

Re: Concesti helmet - John Conyard - 11-17-2009

Thank you very much. With the silver this helmet is an expensive one to reproduce.

Re: Concesti helmet - John Conyard - 12-07-2009

Olaf Küppers deserves a mention for getting some useful information to me. In fact the only information we were able to gather about this helmet. To cut a long story short rather than use the silver we went for a simple straightforward version covered in brass. It's still at the production stage but will be used next season as a standard group helmet

Re: Concesti helmet - John Conyard - 12-07-2009

I like the tall central ridge, made from copper alloy on the iron original.

Re: Concesti helmet - John Conyard - 12-07-2009

Well, it has yet to be finished but it’s not far off.

You see the late Roman army is a very efficient disciplined organisation. None of this 1st century running around like headless chickens, with Centurions competing for glory, getting killed etc. etc . We have perfected the state run factory system. You could say we have made sure that even the cavalry run on time.

And of course this helmet is made in Eastern Europe where quality and timescales are assured.
