Looks like Pamukkale (ancient Hierapolis).
Yup.

Correct, over to you, Duncan.

Try this one. No ornate architecture. Just plain old archaeology. What are we looking at, and where is it?

Quiz - Tormenta - 01-03-2013

I see some lines(one or two more pixels wouldn't hurt  ). Maybe some fortlet or tower along some wall, difficult to say...

Somewhere in Scotland, looks like...

Quiz - Flavivs Aetivs - 01-04-2013

I think it's a fortlet, maybe a barracks.

Quiz - Vindex - 01-04-2013

A turret on the Antonine Wall?

(All the grey masonry on the housing suggests Scotland to me too ;-) )

Quiz - Jona Lendering - 01-04-2013

Duntocher, at the western end of the Antonine Wall.

Quiz - Gaius Julius Caesar - 01-04-2013

I think the time has come to rebuild the wall, so there is something more substantial for you
to post as photographs, Duncan! ;-)

Quiz - Flavivs Aetivs - 01-04-2013

I've really gotta start using Google earth for these quizzes xD

Quiz - D B Campbell - 01-04-2013

Quote:Duntocher, at the western end of the Antonine Wall.
Well done, Jona! Duntocher is one of my favourite sites, because we learn so much from so little. Back to you.

Quote:A turret on the Antonine Wall?
There aren't any turrets on the Antonine Wall, Moi! The square part is a fortlet (like the milecastles on HW) which was subsequently expanded to make a small fort.

Quote:(All the grey masonry on the housing suggests Scotland to me too ;-) )
Ooh, miaow!

Let's do it! :cheer:

Quiz - Flavivs Aetivs - 01-04-2013

As the Theodosian walls show, our attempts to reconstruct portions usually are inadequate and fall apart easily. It would be best to leave the Antonine wall as is.

Quiz - Jona Lendering - 01-04-2013

Here are several photos from splendid mosaics. They are from the fifth century and if you want to see them, you will have to fly to Beirut and rent a car to go to ... well, that's the question. Where are these mosaics?

Bonus question: where were they excavated (ancient or modern name will do), and what made the excavation so very special?
