New to RAT - Shield info sources - Tristan - 05-23-2012

Hi everyone,

I'm new here but have been attempting to recreate the different Roman shields throughout its history. However, it is rather difficult to find information and archaeological examples of shields outside of the "popular" rectangular Imperial Scutum. Legio XX website has been great help. :-)

Anyone know where I might find more comprehensive info or at least some good book or internet sources?

Here's a picture of my practice attempts at a Roman Imperial scutum and cavalry scutum. Still need to attach the bosses and wax them completely.

Get the book 'Romische Schielde' which was published recently.
Next of interest would be Simon James' Dura Europos report, available for free download via Ethos.

For depiction check Trajans Column and the Notitia dignitaus for shield emblems.
