Painting Roman Miniatures - Help, tips and advice - damianlz - 01-25-2012

While this may intrest only a few I know that alot of people hold off on miniatures with the idea that unless they can paint award winning miniatures they will be mocked and ridiculed. The truth is that even after practice on one or two miniatures a persons painting skill jumps incredibly, and there are dirty cheating secrets that can help you quickly attain your own cohort with which to do battle.

Most of these Tutorials will be for 28mm (the most common miniature size) I tend to deal with 6mm more but will try post anything I can find.


The biggest/dirtyest secret - Dipping. This is what I use currently for mass armys, and while painting specialists snort derisively at this technique I think its critical to getting 4000 miniatures painted and prepped, as oppose to every mid rank, unseen soldier having their fingernails intricately painted - leave that for the commanders.

My pleasure! I hope this helps although dont forget there are thousands of amazing sites out there. To anyone who is new to the hobby BUY DECENT BASING! Even the most sloppily painted miniatuers (aka mine) look fantastic and coherent once based, even basically.

I probably wouldn't use dipping on 28mm minis (my obsessive mode kicks in at this scale), but I cheerfully do it for 15mm and intend to do it for 6mm. Results here (this is the Army Painter strong tone dip.):

They look good as units, awful as single minis, but then 15mm is not about single minis. The dip works really well here. I've done 8 stands of legionaries (4 per stand) in three evenings, all in all some 8-9h). Using dipping you can have a DBA army fully painted in 1-2 weeks. I'm now going to check how this works on 6mm, just got a wagonload from Baccus.

I agree. Perhaps a Roman one, perhaps a Greek one, and perhaps an Enemies of one (since this site seems to split down that way) or perhaps just everything under the sun - under the one roof? Smile :-D 8)
