What\'s the first step... - Dan D'Silva - 01-20-2012

... in starting a reenactment group?

I've been thinking about this for months, and have found lots of helpful suggestions around the Net regarding how to run a new group, but what's the actual genesis consist of?

Finding some core members in you local area. Check the group listing thread to see how close the existing groups are. Perhaps a being vexalation of an existing group would help you get started.

What time period/ethnicity are you planning to depict?

Thanks, I actually hadn't noticed that one. That'll also be helpful in compiling a list of faraway contacts.

Achaemenid. Basically the idea is to fill out the ranks for major Graeco-Persian Wars events over the next decade, so the focus would be Medo-Persian, but any imperial subjects who historically took part would be welcome.

In fact, part of the idea is to recruit people in different places and put them in touch with groups close to them that do Classical reenacting and might be attending these events.

Another Q, if I may trouble the forum: What's a good free site for a homepage that looks okay?

(I'm afraid it has to be free, since I don't have an income at the moment.)

What I use for my home page is http://www.obliquity.com which gives you
ORDNANCE SURVEY GRID REFERENCE TO LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE

What is good with this one is when reduced it can be pushed to the right and used with Google Earth for converting grids and moving around the world where you want fast.

However you sound like you just want a good happy picture one am I correct.

Well, more like a good clear, simple one, like Matt's hoplite site. In fact I'd like to be able to code it myself, although I don't know if that precludes having a bulletin board.

Okay, I swore I'd do something by the end of January. So until getting a proper page up and running, a blog. Here's hoping it does more good than bad!
