Roman Miniatures News Thread - damianlz - 01-17-2012

I am creating this thread to advertise and advise anyone interested on the continual and ever growing variety of Roman Miniatures. I welcome one and all to update and add to the thread.

Warlord Games - Praetorian Cavalry

Link: http://www.warlordgames.com/16126/gallery-praetorian/

Resplendent in their cloaks and Attic helmets, the Praetorian cavalry cut a dashing figures on the tabletop. It wasn’t all looks though – they were capable of causing havoc with the enemy battleline and as such not many commanders will leave their fort without at least one unit of these noble horsemen. Whether you are looking for an escort for a Roman dignitary (or indeed the Emperor himself!) or looking to put the fear of the Gods into your opponent you know what you need to add to your army…

Baccus 6MM Macedonian cavalry

With the festive season well and truely behind us, it's time to turn our thoughts to some real work. We are busy working on the moulds for the first new releases of 2012 which will be the Brunswick contingent for those of you waiting to complete your 1815 armies. However, the subject of today's piece is a preview of something very different. Having completed the process of resculpting the Ancients Greek range we're now moving on to the Macedonians, so here for your delectation is a preview of what to expect,

28MM Plastic Ancient Greek Hoplites!

Link: http://www.warlordgames.com/15837/new-plastic-ancient-greek-hoplites/

These figures can be used to represent the armies of the Greek city states and the mercenaries that fought abroad from the mid-6th century to the 4th century BC

- I think it is this box set that has the Pilos cap, etrusco-thrathian and other helms that would be great for pre-Camillian Romans

Re: Roman Miniatures News Thread - igorbab - 01-20-2012

Re: Roman Miniatures News Thread - rononmaximus - 01-22-2012

Warlord Games have some great ancient miniatures, they're my favorite company.

I also like Caesar Miniatures but they're harder to get - check them out here

My painting skills are very close to zero, really basic stuff but always fun to do it.

I've never heard of this manufacturer before André, thanks for mentioning them. With figures having been produced in recent years from Russia, it is nice to see they are emerging even farther afield - this lot seem to be in Taiwan!

They seem to have all periods covered. I wish they'd been around when I was a youngster because I was interested in the larger figures then - but now I prefer 28mm types.

Nice models though Smile Big Grin 8)

For anyone who would like to paint, even basically I will be putting up a thread late tonight for some easy work arounds and some great tutorials.

For todays news though

28mm Warlord - Imperial Roman Legionary Slingers

It is widely believed that Legionaries were trained to use a sling. Not ones to pass up the opportunity to make a great looking model we now present you with our Roman Legionary Slingers.

Re: Roman Miniatures News Thread - Theo - 01-24-2012

Please don't forget "Aventine Miniatures"'s new range of Romans. These are 28mm and designed for around 160-190AD. Already there are legionaries and praetorians. they are designed by the same person who designed the 3rd and 4th century figures for "A and A".

As though Theo was an oracle himself - Todays update is from Aventine (the best sculpture and minis hands down)

the need. They have a new oval scutum (we will also supply the AVS15 rectangular scutum if requested instead).

Re: Roman Miniatures News Thread - Ghostmojo - 01-26-2012

Aventine do fantastic figures. There's no doubt about it. Those above are beautiful and so very finely detailed. Absolutely first class! I really like these sort of 'advancing' postures as well - they are better (IMHO) than the static shields-up/spears-sticking-out poses, or the standing-to-attention/spears-vertical types. They would be getting some serious orders from me if they did some Greeks like this (especially Spartans) with officers/musicians/ensigns/kings/personalities etc.

I know Hellenic troops are well covered by other manufacturers - but nobody does very good Spartans (especially later period). Foundry used to do a good selection but they have whittled it right down to surprisingly few and the ones they kept are not even the best figures! The Warlord figures mentioned above now produce some Greeks/Spartans - and they are not bad (former Immortal Figures) - but they are precisely the kind of postures I don't like much since they hide so much of the figure and are difficult to line up behind each other. I know it is just personal taste, but a bunch of figures waving spears around (like the Warlord ones above) no matter how finely crafted, just look like a rabble to me!

You know what to do guys! I notice you have produced some Pyrrhic Epeirote/Makedonian phalangite figures which are superb too. Just expand out to cover other late Greeks and you could clear up here!!!

Re: Roman Miniatures News Thread - damianlz - 01-28-2012

Hey Ghost have you looked at the Immortal miniatures? there are three variations of Hoplite though I am not sure what later sets should look like.

28MM Warlord - Roman Sentries

Link: http://www.warlordgames.com/16671/new-imperial-roman-sentries/

The pack contains two different bodies – one with hood drawn up against the foul weather (or, perhaps, the shield from the glaring sun…) ans the other with cape hood down and with separate head. Included in the pack are two head options – one wearing standard Imperial Gallic legionary helmet and the other sporting an auxiliary helmet.

Re: Roman Miniatures News Thread - rononmaximus - 01-28-2012

Wow, first time I'm discovering "Aventine Miniatures" Confusedhock: They look amazing! I know where I'll be spending my money next time I buy figures! I really like the details and the quality of the sculpting! I can't resist, even though I suck at painting and currently unemployed... I blame it on Simon Scarrow's book... Going to try and wait till I "paint" all the figures I have around...so maybe at the end of Summer

I guess we'll be seeing more classical figures at Warlord Games since they bought Immortal miniatures, which is good cause they're both great, so it's a quality deal.

Yes indeed. I was quite familiar with them when the were still an active independent company. The figures are very nicely sculptured, but as I say those postures (waving spears around above heads) are not for me!

BTW - those Roman sentries look very good SLD - but both of them look seriously cheesed off too! Sentry duty on a windswept Hadrian's Wall perhaps in early February?
