Leather bags, packs, pouches, and statchels - jbd_29349 - 10-08-2011

I have recently recreated a number of leather objects for my kit and really enjoyed making them! I have made a set of pytruges for the waist down, a "notebook" bag, and a coin purse inspired from a 3rd century find. I am also working on the large bag found in the Cammachio wreck that Martin Moser made as soon as the leather comes in.

I would like to work on other items but I am coming up short on articles and such to go off of. I have found articles about the bags found in the Cave of Letters in Israel but want to do bags from the Late 1st century BC to the end of the 1st century AD.

Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

A contubernium tent would take your time for a while.

A must have item for me was a tool-bag, and I found an example in the Vindolanda museum, on Hadrian's Wall. It is a 30cm diameter circle of goatskin, that had been folded in half. Slits had been cut along its perimeter to hold a leather cord. I chuck all much leather-working tools into the middle, pull on the cord and the tool bag 'zips up'. Its an essential item for me, and I know its an exact copy of the original! Unfortunately it won't challenge your skills, and will take you 10 minutes to make Smile

Martin Moser put up a thread a year or two ago with links to a number of finds of bags but I couldn't find it.

I did find this one though, which might be of interest. Martin is sure to be able to provide more information on this and other leather items.

If you haven't made a shield cover yet there is some info in the photo section of the Roman shields yahoo group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Romanshield/

If you are interested in making a tegimen/shield cover, have a look at this thread. I have a lot of unpublished information on shield covers but have had to agree not to pass on any documents I hold. I can however make use of the information to help other people as long as the papers and drawings themselves are not passed on. With this in mind I gave a set of instructions based on both published and unpublished evidence in this thread:

Hi Joshua,

Quote:I have found articles about the bags found in the Cave of Letters in Israel but want to do bags from the Late 1st century BC to the end of the 1st century AD.

As you already mentioned the Comacchio bag there is not much left that can be securely dated into that time frame: a very simple bag was also found in the wreck and that's about it AFAIK.

So what other bags could possibly go into this time frame?

Thanks for the info on the tegimen Crispvs!

Crispvs, thanks for the information on the tegimen!

I am just finishing a Comacchio bag (thanks, Martin) and would also like some ideas for further work...

A tent is one of my grand ambitions, but I was thinking - maybe start from a centurio tent, which should be much smaller? Anyone has sizes/pattern? Also, how do you manage to do tunnel stitch in goat leather, isn't it too thin for this?

Well, actually the general view is that the Centurio tent is much bigger. And for some details, do a good search on RAT. There has been lengltly discussion on here. Also of interest might be the website of Jared Fleury.

For before the Comacchio finds there is nothing that I am aware of as far as bags are concerned :-(
For the 2nd century I know of the following:
- Finds from Israel, which you already mentioned.
- Fragments of what seems to have been a rectangular bag from Bar Hill.
