Tactics: Employment of Artillery - jkaler48 - 09-03-2011

We have the Gladius and Pilum employment threads and I fear the poor Artillery guys feel neglected so here is the employment of Artillery Thread.

For the purposes of discussion I suggest using a few modern terms for ease of understanding. They are:

Direct Support: Directly supporting or assigned to a particular unit
General Support: General supporting the whole force on the field
Portee: Mule carried.

I think Roman artillery organic to the century could be assigned in a direct support role or withdrawn from the centuries and placed in general support of the cohort or Legion.

And there were larger artillery piece that where likely assigned to the Legion HQ and operated in a general support role most of the time.
