Greek shield design question - joeandmich - 08-30-2011 I've noticed that some Greek reenactors are creatively liberal with their shield designs. I've seen at least 6 versions of the Spartan style, several gorgon, some bull heads, snakes, hydras and even 1 horse's ass. Would it be considered inappropriate to have a lionhead as a device on an aspis? Thanks Re: Greek shield design question - caiusbeerquitius - 08-30-2011 wrong subforum Re: Greek shield design question - joeandmich - 08-30-2011 Quote:wrong subforum That's so weird I tried opening it in the Greek Reenactment subforum and now I can't delete it. Moderator can you please move my topic? Thanks Re: Greek shield design question - Iraklitos - 08-31-2011 There's another thread (probably in the beginner's section) that talks about shield designs with links etc... If you're asking about a straight on view, then the reference would be Herkules (one of his 12 labors). If you're asking about a side view a la Detroit Lions then maybe not. If you want to see a variety of styles prior to doing your research check out "Little Big Men Shield Designs". While it's for miniatures it'll give you an ideal concerning those multiple Gorgan etc... designs. Re: Greek shield design question - joeandmich - 08-31-2011 Thank you Re: Greek shield design question - hoplite14gr - 09-01-2011 Please try thisz Joe http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat.html?func=view&catid=19&id=50221#50221 http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat.html?func=view&catid=19&id=50221&limit=20&start=260#273486 Re: Greek shield design question - joeandmich - 09-05-2011 I design a few shield designs and wanted your opinions. Which do you think would be most appropriate? The letters in the top image seem a combination of Chakidic and runic(!!!!???!!!???? hock: )alphabets The middle one can be atributed to Sparta. If you want a lionhead try a stylistic approach. Profile lionhead was associated was asociated with Corinthian Hippes o Lindos in Rhodes Example of Rhodian lion http://www.koryvantes.org/koryvantes/showEnMeleti.jsp?key=4 Re: Greek shield design question - joeandmich - 09-05-2011 Did you open the last picture? For some reason it would only allow it as an attachment. Re: Greek shield design question - hoplite14gr - 09-06-2011 Saw it. Still stand by my previous post. A good example of a lion head is on Chigi asuming you like Corinthians. i.e (2nd from left) http://hetairoi.de/zenphoto/2010/otterbach/DSC04083.JPG.php?p=*full-image Re: Greek shield design question - KrimzonKnight - 09-09-2011 what about this smiley face !? though i sorta doubt its historically accurate, I just love the idea of a smiley face on my shield ( when i get one), it just fits perfectly with my personality. Plus i like the idea of having the last thing my opponents see be a smiley face smiling at them as they die.
