Temp exhibit in Croatia: where are they now? - richsc - 04-29-2015

Happened upon this Youtube video of what is called a temporary exhibit of military objects in the archaeological museum of Croatia. Any idea what happened to these? On display anywhere?

Have you tried contacting the museum directly Richard? Most Croatian's speak perfect English so they should be able to help you out.

Shame, I missed this display. :x The archeological museum in Zagreb has a very good roman permanent exhibit, but the stuff seen in this video mostly isn't from the permanent exhibit. I have no idea where the items might be. They are having very nice temporary exhibit about Iberians right now. Beautiful falcata displayed among other things.

As the video said, the exhibition coincided with ROMEC XVII in Zagreb and a bilingual (English & Croatian) catalogue of all the items (a gorgeous, full-colour hardback), with some good overview essays, was produced. Sadly (as so often happens) it is out of print now but major academic libraries should have copies. I'll have a word with Ivan and see if there's any chance of him putting it online (his Siscia catalogue is now available in its entirety).

Buy that guy a beer! or cider. Just as an aside, I've been noting where to buy English ciders around the Washington area just on the off chance you show up. Even have one in the fridge waiting.

By all accounts, you have some pretty fine ciders of your own on the east coast of the USA. My guiding principle is always to taste the local brew ;-)

Back on topic, it should be said that much of the stuff in that exhibition either came from regional museums (like those at Trilj near Tilurium or at Burnum) or the reserve collections of the Zagreb museum.

Ivan has got back to me. The Zagreb exhibition catalogue is still available (you can find it here -- scroll down to 'Finds of the Roman Military Equipment in Croatia') and costs 100 Croatian kuna ($14.79/£9.77/€13.20) exclusive of P&P.
