Greek triremes - Zeuxippos - 07-06-2011

On a typical Greek trireme how many people manned the oars generally? What was an average crew size for a Classical Greek trireme as well?

Thanks

Re: Greek triremes - hoplite14gr - 07-06-2011

170 oarsmem with the other naval crew ranging between 5 and 12 men.
The fighting marines (both hoplites and missle troops)were between 6 an 20 with an unusual case by Cimon to have loaded 40 marines on board! Thukidides gives an indication of increased numbers of missile troops at Syvota.
