Paint \"Sealant\" for Roman Scutum - Antoninus05 - 02-21-2011

Ave all.......OK, after you paint the Scutum with milk paint, do you need to put any sealant on it? If so, what are the recommendations? Thanks in advance, Antoninus

Ah, it will get chalky white marks if it gets rained on. I tend to coat it with wax, such as Sno-Seal, applied with a hair dryer. We've also done one or two with either neatsfoot or linseed oil. Oil needs time to really set in and dry, but the wax is ready to go immediately upon completion. A couple of my guys have uncoated paint jobs, and simply don't worry about the marks--they aren't that horrible.

When you say hair dryer, do you brush or wipe on the Sno Seal(I have some) and then use the hair dryer to "set" it? MIke

Right, basically melting it into the surface, just like on a pair of hiking boots. You should not need so much that the surface is sticky when you're done!

Ave Matt,

I just picked up some casein paint from a local store that may be a good alternative to the Shiva brand you recommend on your website. It's called Pelikan Plaka and comes in a glass jar. Each jar costs almost $5. (Actually, it varies based on the color.)

On the the label it says that it's waterproof and non-fade.

Have you heard of or tried this brand before?

If not, I'll let you know after I've tried it.
