Ernst Badian (1925-2011) - Jona Lendering - 02-03-2011

This brings the very sad news that Professor Ernst Badian died last night (Tuesday) after a fall at his home on Monday. He was taken to hospital, but his injuries had caused a coma, and he died peacefully.

There will be a funeral service at 12 noon tomorrow (Thursday, February 3) at the Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 1668 Beacon Street, Brookline (the Chapel has a web-site).

Those attending are asked to arrive not later than 11.45, and the service is expected to last some 30-60 minutes. No flowers, please: a later notice may be sent later about charitable donations in Ernst’s name.

I am very sorry to learn of this. Badian was a great influence on me at university through his friend and former student the late Dr Chris Ehrhardt, who was my own friend and former teacher.

Badian had an influence on so many ancient scholars. His work 'Publicans and sinners: private enterprise in the service...' is a colossal work which helped me from time to time.
