Silvio Berlusconi and the mystery emperor - Epictetus - 01-28-2011

I saw this image on the NY Times website and I can't figure out who could be the bust. Is the Italian PM posing in front of a Roman Emperor? At first I thought it was Caracalla, but after looking at some other busts now I'm not so sure.

Who is this?

For some reason Caracalla does seem to turn up a lot as badly cast garden / hotel ornament. Very strange.
The curly hair does point in his general direction.

A shame it's not Nero, or maybe Caligula

I think Caracalla's your man though - quite possibly the bust is original (Signor Berlusconi is the PM of Italy, after all, so he doesn't have to get his ornaments from the local garden centre...). The angle, and the bleaching effect of the light, might alter the appearance somewhat, but I think it's something like this one:

Or perhaps Geta, who has similar hair but a rounder face:

Depends on the location of the photo, of course - anyone recognise that hedge?

"- anyone recognise that hedge?"

Not I, but aren't there any number of young women who can answer that one?

Berlusconi is an ancient Roman himself. He's also a dirty old man and one wonders how he manages to continue to get away with his misdeeds. To the Colosseum with him!!!

Just came across this picture, giving a better view of the mystery bust:

and of cheeky chappie Silvio...

Looks like this is indeed a rather poor quality copy of a bust of Caracalla. Appropriate, perhaps?

The sad thing being Berlusconi surviving his 29th year of life...

Some things are better left unsaid, M.Vib.M, don't you think?

Ah well, at least he did not have a brother named Geta... Wink
