Praetorian Guardsman wanted! (or a trooper of the ESA...) - Praefectusclassis - 01-12-2011

For an upcoming issue of Ancient Warfare, I'm looking for a quality representation of a Praetorian guardsman (or even cooler: a trooper of the Equites Singulares Augusti). The photos have to be top-notch, as well as your kit, of course. It won't make you rich, but it will make you famous in this relatively small, but discerning community!

Aren't they a bit of the 'Gladiator' type? I mean, blackened armour, black leather subarmalis, very dark tunic....

I think so. But I'm not sure. I think we had a discussion with one of them some time ago in the 'show your roman soldier impression' topic, concerning phalerae use by ordinairy soldiers.

Jasper,

I am with Robert on this one about the blackened or blued armor. Some of the kit looks blueish.

It looks nice but at the same time they look a little like movie props because of how the armor was treated. No offense.

Interesting site -- clearly they take their work very seriously and generally it looks very good ... except for that black armor.

I know of no evidence that the Praetorians wore black armor. The idea that Black is the elite color of choice seems, to me, to be a rather modern concept. (No doubt some armed force in the ancient world used black, but the Romans of the Republic or early Principate?)

Unfortunately I do not read German, so I can not tell -- Do they give any evidence to justify the color of their armor?

There is a figure in a black tunic shown on the third century Luxor fresco but the only evidence I have ever seen for Praetorians in black tunics was in the films 'Quo Vadis' and 'Gladiator' which are hardly what I would call prime sources. It was certainly true in the latter and probably true of the former as well, that this colour was chosen to make them look like the SS! I do not think I have ever come across a black cloak either outside of mentions in funerary contexts.

However if this group have found evidence to the contrary I would be pleased to hear of it.

Graham.
