Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - Gladius Hispaniensis - 01-03-2011

Ave

I need some information on basic uniforms and weapons used by the Carthaginians especially in the 2nd Punic War. Can anyone post a link please? Pics will be highly appreciated Big Grin Thanks in advance.

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - Ghostmojo - 01-04-2011

This is something that also interests me. I have discussed a recent book I purchased on the Carthaginian (more specifically Hannibal's) Army elsewhere:

I think we are still living in anticipation of somebody completing the definitive study. Osprey have a new book out which I haven't got around to acquiring yet - but will do soon (a belated Christmas present to myself perhaps?).

Happy hunting!

Hi Imad
You'll find such material in scarce supply, I'm afraid, because so little information survives. Start off with a copy of the Ancient Warfare magazine, Volume III, Issue 4, for the outstanding article The Barcids at War, by Alberto Perez and our own Paul McDonnell-Staff. It has great pictures too.

Other useful volumes with good images include two by Osprey: Armies of the Carthaginian Wars, and the brand new Carthaginian Warrior

You'll also get some great plates in two books by Peter Connolly, Warfare in the Classical World, and Hannibal and the Enemies of Rome:H

Don't forget the reenacting threads here - search the Carthaginian ones for some truly excellent pictures of Spanish reenactors in Punic War gear.

Are you searching as a reenactor, or is it another reason?

No intentions of re-enacting. I just like to visualise things accurately when reading about campaigns, battles etc.

Hi you all!

This is approximately the aspect of a Carthaginian phalanx around Second Punic War with Iberian auxiliares on the right side of line and slinger(s) at front...

this one shows the light carthaginian auxiliaries attacking the right side of the Roman acies...

And this one shows two high Carthaginian commanders...

Hope this helps!

I say, that shopping bag ruins the atmosphere Wink

Nice outfits! Good work!

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - john roberts - 04-05-2011

I think that word "uniforms" is hanging us up here. Uniformity in the modern sense didn't exist in the ancient world. The closest might be "theme" units like Nero's legion equipped "in the Greek fashion."

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - Ultilatie - 04-05-2011

Military uniformity between armies of the ancient mediterranean peoples...?? That's impossible! It's a common sense question: we're mediterranean!

Great picures,J.M.,thanks! When were they taken?

Plus - have you any idea where I could lay my hands on a crimson edged Iberian tunic?

Thanks.

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - Ultilatie - 04-07-2011

Hi!

We toke theses pics during an event we were in Ibiza, celebrating the ancient carthaginian heritage of the island. Between four groups tried to reenact and anonymous battle of the Second Punic War.

I can get you that tunic, Ben.
Do you received my mail about Iberian Caetrae?

Regards

Lots of great information, and photos!

Hi
Here you can see an possible Semeiophoros for an carthaginian Syntagma.

3d Figur is based on Ospreys Xanthippus picture:

and an lusitanian warrior based on Johnny Shumate reconstruction in Warfare magazin:

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - Ghostmojo - 04-08-2011

Your Carthaginian is an interesting hybrid figure!  Xanthippos was after all a Spartan condotierre earning a buck for the homeland (or himself). Xanthippos is portrayed on that cover wearing fairly normal Spartan gear - although by that period we can't really be sure whether wandering adventurers like him would have stuck quite so firmly to the code of Lykourgos - especially as they weren't doing so back home by this time ...

However, it's excellent work - you should be applauded 8) 8) 8). How on earth do you create such figures? I'd like to have a go at doing some Spartans and other Greeks.

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - H.Balck - 04-08-2011

Yes - its an mix - we have no sources for correct punic standard bearers.

I am working and take many paintings from Osprey and Warfare magazin and transfer it to my 3d figures. BTW Kostas Nikellis ist the chief master of greek figures and scenes - I like his work so mutch.

I produced romans, celts, germans and carthagnian figures first.
Take a look at my newest roman Augustean Miles:

Re: Need info on Carthaginian uniforms - Gladius Hispaniensis - 04-08-2011

Hi H.Balck

Your Lusitanian figure seems to be sporting a Gladius Hispaniensis if I'm not mistaken. Any reason for that?
