NEW Web \'Life in the Legion\' and \'Reconstruction Gallery\' - Ammianus - 11-29-2010

Hope this is the right place to post this!

We have just added two new sections to the Comitatus Website which we have been developing for some time.

The first section is "Life in the Legion"
http://www.comitatus.net/army.html
This hopes to explain everything to do with the being in the Late Roman Army, categorised in to several sub-sections.

And the second is the "Reconstruction Gallery"
http://www.comitatus.net/reconstructiongallery.html

This is something we really hope to expand in the future, although it is already large. Full of good quality images and useful descriptions. Big Grin

I hope these are of interest to you all.

I spotted them already and they indeed are a great resource. Thank you very much for making this publically available Big Grin I hope my cavalry website can become such a resource as well, but it will be a long way, for sure. Well done.

This is a big project and I am sure we will make mistakes a long the way. Lots and lots of photos will be added in due course, and the galleries will be constantly changing.

I am really looking forward to the clothing section - dressing low and high staus men and women bit by bit. The models will have have to be carefully chosen.

It is not an emblem. But the Terentius illustration is designed to show something of life in the army, soldiers, their clothing and belief. It illustrates this sub-section of the Comitatus site perfectly.

I am not always comfortable taking a subjective view of the life of a legionary, and prefer to stick to hard archaeological evidence and it's interpretation. But it is enjoyable to try and place a late Roman soldier in the north of Britain in context, while challenging a few pre-conceptions along the way.

Such iconogrpahy would have looked down from the walls of most head quarters buildings. I wish we had more, especially from the 4th century.

Nice to get a hint of what it looks like! Thanks for posting it on RAT, Amy!
Looks like some hard work went into it!

Re: NEW Web \'Life in the Legion\' and \'Reconstruction Gallery\' - John Conyard - 12-12-2010

Hmmmmm. Well this stroppy person turns up and empties out my equipment room, garage, assorted boxes, etc. takes lots of badly composed pictures, complains about the the light levels, complains about my knowledge of Roman pottery, eats my food, drinks my wine, and then leaves still complaining about the lack of some bits of equipment we don't seem to have.

Frankly I am not paid enough. Or indeed at all. It is very stressful.

I am sorry for painting all your efforts in such a disparaging way. Without all your good ideas, hard work and technical expertise the website wouldn’t be what it is today. So at the sight of your raised eyebrow I will retreat back into my shell for Christmas. Sorry!

Certainly is. The spurs are interesting. Would be nice to see another angle on some pieces too.
