Can Iron be tinned?? - Folkert van Wijk - 11-01-2010

A simple question (i hope)
I always thought that only brons or brass could be tinned, is that so?
And is there a differnce for this, those days or back then?

Iron/steel can be tinned. As far as I know, the process is the same, though I admit I have not tinned anything very large. Once did a brass helmet using tinning compound bought from the hardware store.

Actually, modern "tin cans" are galvanized steel, meaning zinc-plated. But yes, the term does come from earlier tin-plated iron or steel, very common in the 18th and 19th century. There are plenty of ancient and medieval iron artifacts that are tinned, including a few lorica segmentata plates, apparently.

Jeff! You're alive!! Get your gluteus down here to an event, boy! Or I'll dock your pay.

Hope you're doing well, seriously. Nice helmet, too! Vale,
