Retro-fitted helmet - Crispvs - 10-19-2010
I came across this drawing and was immediately struck by the fact that the fourth helmet from the left does not appear to be the Berzobis helmet and the way it is depicted suggests it is an actual find.

Does anyone know more about this helmet? Is it Robinson's Imperial Gallic type 'K' cleaned up or is it a different helmet altogether?

Looks like an Imperial Italic helmet with some Gallic features..

Indeed, it could for the same be an imp. Gallic helmet with Italic influences (which it would be in my opinion). Unfortunatelly I can't help with the original question, although I find it an interesting picture and good question.

Mainly the cheek-plates, the neck-plate angle, the bowl itself... apart from the "gallic" brows.

Bowl is bowl shaped, like a Gallic...neck plate, not to dissimilar to a Gallic(or the 3 preceeding it)... the cheek pieces I would agree with, but perhaps replacements....I've seen the three holes before somewhere though, can't recall exactly where though.

I think that if there was a browband present no-one would see it as anything other than an Imperial Gallic helmet. The type 'J' from Brigettio has its eyebrows positioned high up on the bowl; the brow of the type 'I' from Mainz projects at a similar angle; the peak, although set at a different angle, is not too dissimilar is size to that of the type 'G' from Worms. The Worms type 'G' also has its neck guard at a fairly shallow angle, as does the type 'F' from Besancon.
To be honest I didn't really take that much notice of the cheek guards as these are so often absent that they could easily have been restored by the artist for the purpose of depicting a complete helmet.

:oops: Hmmm - it seems I have answered my own question. It seems that the site I found the picture on had filched it (along with several other pictures) from none other than my own group's website, where it has been nestling in Peronis' article on Trajanic helmets, which has been on our site for a little over two years now. :oops: :roll:
It was more than two years since I first read the article and I had mistakenly remembered the picture to have shown the Berzobis helmet rather than this one. :oops:
The helmet turns out to be from Brigetio and it presently in the Hollitzer Collection in Vienna. Peronis describes it in his article. :roll: :oops:
I think perhaps I should go to bed to make up for the sleep I have obviously been missing out on. If anyone spots me wearing my clothes back to front please do tell me.
