Self publishing portal with B&N - richsc - 10-05-2010

For those of you interested in self publishing and making something from it, Barnes and Noble has just turned on their self publishing portal PubIt [url:2li4prrs]Http://pubit.barnesandnoble.com[/url]
I guess you don't pay to get published since B&N takes a percentage: see engadget article below:

Of course those of you who fancy yourselves as writers of original non-fiction on anything to do with ancient warfare could always try sending a synopsis/proposal to me and have it considered for publication with a well-established specialist military history publisher before you resort to the self-publishing route.

I'll take the offer into consideration, though I don't think a young, undergraduate history major at a state university like myself can get anything published at this point. Smile

Not at all -- if you have something to say, and can say it well, then anything is possible.

Another perspective on the cost to the author:

The comments to the article are very interesting -- clearly the debate about E-books and/or Self-publishing is far from over.

And they keep coming: this one publishes your blog to an ebook and helps publish it to Amazon et al. Makes you wonder if RAT could eventually be published, with every contributor getting a proportional piece of the pie. What do you think, Jasper?

Interesting idea Rich, but someone would have to go over each and every thread to cull the dross. You're looking at almost 250,000 posts. Say they consist on average of 25 words (I very much doubt it's that low), you're looking at a book of 6,250,000 words! A 100,000 word book is pretty normal, so that's a 62 volume series, even without the 6000 attachments...

Thanks Jasper. This certainly is a viable alternative to Lulu.com. Apple has approved Lulu as an aggregator of content for the iBookstore and has designed a one-stop solution for publishing and selling your books on the iPad: http://www.lulu.com/apple-ipad-publishing# Good to see some competition now in epublishing! Text convertors still have someway to go, however:

I used lulu to package some of my wife's writings together into a book for a gift (no commercial motives). It wasn't the best thing in the world, but I was satisfied with the quality of the finished product, all things considered.

That's true Jasper, but think of everything covered over time. What a resource!

True, but then you also need someone willing to index all topics (which on its own would make a whole volume of index record. Although I certainly would love to have at least some of the discussions on here as a nice sourcebook.

Re: Self publishing portal with B&N - richsc - 10-20-2010

maybe the best threads could be identified and tagged?

Re: Self publishing portal with B&N - Praefectusclassis - 10-20-2010

They could be in a different system, I think, sure.
