Finding a good lorica hamata - danny117ca - 06-30-2010 Hello, I'm trying to buy a lorica hamata and fully embrace my love of all things Roman (legion-wise, anyway). But since I'm willing to plunk down money on a hamata, I would really like to get something authentic. The problem is, there are tons of hamatas on the web, which is confusing the heck out of me as to which ones are good or bad. What gears do you use, or consider to be 'authentic?' P.S.: Is the Find-it armory's ferrata hamata or Imperium Ancient Armory's 'super authentic' hamatas any good, by chance? Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - jvrjenivs - 06-30-2010 First, you should ask yourself the question which kind of hamata you wanna have. Okay, I think the answer is simple: a first century one without sleeves and with the 'normal' shoulderdoubling. Okay, next to that, the current standard in re-enactment is one with 6mm rings with altered riveted and solid rings. As far as I know both Imperium and Find-it armory sell these. I don't have seen both, so I am unable to tell which is better, but I think either one will do. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Gaius Julius Caesar - 06-30-2010 A good choice is also SOTW. Rusty's website is pretty informative. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - MARCvSVIBIvSMAvRINvS - 06-30-2010 www.armae.com very nice and very affordable. M.VIB.M. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Lunico - 08-28-2010 Hello guys, I browsed the internet and found a vendor that sells Lorica Hamatas at a very affordable price. But I'm not sure about the ones he sells are acceptable for reenactment. Please take a look and tell me what you guys think about the Hamata! Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Doc - 08-28-2010 The best lorica hamata that money can buy is custom made by Erik Schmid. There is NO ONE better than he at making such a shirt. Just about all the shirts currently made come from India. They are ok. However, if you want the best, I know that Erik has changed his prices lately and made them more affordable. You will have to contact him for further info. Some of his shirts are in museums as are some original shirts that he has repaired. www.erikds.com Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Lunico - 08-28-2010 Thank you for the tip on Erik Schmid! What's your opinion about the Hamata on the picture I posted above? Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Matthew Amt - 08-29-2010 Quote:Hello guys, Well, the shoulder flaps look a little short, and it really doesn't need to have sleeves at all. But the big question is the rings--are they alternating rows of solid and riveted? If not, it's no bargain. I think you can find one that's at least a little better, but you are the one who has to decide what is good enough, what can be fixed, and what is "worth it" to you! Oh, and if you plan to use this as a member of a group, get some advice from the group leader! Vale, Matthew Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Doc - 08-29-2010 As Matt pointed out, the shoulder doublers appear to be too short. The leather looks very cheap not good quality. You must also make sure that the doubler hook is based on something actual not an invention by the manufacturer. I think that too much of the undergarments are visible. This could indicate that the lorica links may be a bit large. Even with the Roman mail size something could be seen but not much since the diameter of the links is quite small. Also as was pointed out the alternating rows of riveted and punched are a must. The punched links should not have a round cross section since punched rings come from flat sheet. The rivet heads should be rounded not pointy or triangular. The internal diameter I think is 6mm for the links. The pattern should be 4 in 1. Make sure that there is no galvanization for corrosion resistance since it will make it look shiny and modern. If so, you must remove this coating since the Romans did not galvanize. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Matthew Corbin - 11-30-2010 What about this from Icefalcon? [url:1xl6f49q]http://store.fastcommerce.com/icefalcon/6mm-roman-hamata-xl-ff8081811ba399ad011beff6a219187f-p.html It certainly isn't cheap, but looks to be of good quality. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - jvrjenivs - 11-30-2010 Quote:What about this from Icefalcon? Seems way too expensive to me, but I don't know who made it, although it could easily be a DSC or Deepeeka one. Same a said before I think the doubler could have been a bit wider, but seems to be okay. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - richard robinson - 11-30-2010 I have heard of groups buying a box of 6 or more shirts from India or pakistan direct and though this can be risky it does significantly reduce the price per shirt good ;uck richard Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - M. Demetrius - 11-30-2010 But shouldn't alternate rows be flat rings? Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - Gaius Julius Caesar - 11-30-2010 It does look a little like the rows are all riveted links, and either all or alternate rows are flat section riveted links. Re: Finding a good lorica hamata - deepeeka - 12-03-2010 Hi I suggest please have a look at this link. <!-- l <a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=29422">viewtopic.php?f=41&t=29422<!-- l Also, please do visit Deepeeka's site, where you can find latest pics of this new hamata in all recommended and other sizes.
