Seedy historians? - D B Campbell - 06-10-2010

Neither Terry Deary nor Niall Ferguson has covered himself with glory in this online spat: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article7140660.ece.

Deary commits the cardinal sin of an ad hominem attack on Ferguson (“Obnoxious people like Niall Ferguson write a book to prove that the British Empire was a good thing. He’s a deeply offensive right-wing man who uses history to get across a political point” ), while Ferguson responds in an elitist, condescending manner that can only cast historians further into suspicion (“It’s a little like asking Rory Bremner for his opinion on George Osborne’s spending cuts or Sacha Baron Cohen to review Simon Schama’s forthcoming history of the Jews. I have read some of the Horrible Histories to my children. They’re quite funny. And so is this” ).

Sadly, Ferguson is not alone. Tudor specialist David Starkey furthers his already pompous image by coming out in support of Ferguson and criticising Deary's Horrible Histories children's books (“Does this man go to the archive, or is he just a parasite on historians?”). In the whole piece, only Catharine Edwards displays the correct (imho) attitude (“If it takes toilets [as in the Horrible Histories books] to get [children] interested in history, that’s fine") -- I like to think that she's the sensible one because she's an ancient historian!

You can see why academics might be a bit dismissive of his opinions.

When he writes that everything he learned after the age of 11 was a waste of time he immediately makes himself useless and redundant as a scholar.

The clash between those two as well as the bickering and personal attacks show only that they are petty human beings, read homines obscuro loco nati.

No honour in that, nor glory. They act as fugitivi and servi. They are cacatores who crap on history and not worth the attention.

LOL

Oh, you spoilsport! There are few finer sports than watching The Great And The Good have a go at each other (think of the Daniels/Simpson spat years back in Britannia). We are all human and this just serves to underline it (there must be something in the air as I gather Sir Patrick Stewart and some minor celeb have been at it too at an awards ceremony).

Personally I favour a much more subtle approach (for which my small elite mobile troop of black-clad ninjas are always ready to do my bidding, borne swiftly into action in an ox-powered paddle ship...). You have all been warned...

That one was quite bizarre -- not the kind of thing you want immortalised in an international journal. Confusedhock:

(Of course, to get the joke, you must start here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UMedd03JCA -- I think this is the first "episode".)

Can't view YouTube in the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Great Jamahiriya (the Great Leader had it banned) but I'm going to guess that's the Baddiel/Newman 'History Today' stuff, yes?

As somebody or other said, "Academic battles are so fierce because the stakes are so small."

For real Ninja goodness here is the link
[url:38659a0z]http://www.ninpo.org/historicalrecords/bansenshukai.html[/url]

In respects to the past age 11 learning is useless thing I would generally agree in school. I have learned much more outside of schools since and not gotten the usual what you need to know stuff. It is sad to say but the History books I had in high school
were written 10 to 15 years prior and didn't cover much more than the Time-Life series. The only saving grace was a teacher that cared. We learned more when he went off topic than when we studied the funded curriculum. Fridays were cool because it was free day. So I would sit there and talk to him while everybody else was doing their nails or talking about the last party they went to. Mr. Santucci always hated curriculum.

A Ninja in every carpet -- is that automatic with EU membership or do you have to pay extra for it?
