I recently came across this beautiful Etruscan example from Bisenzio:

Beautiful, but hardly typical.Etruscans do adopt greek manners in many things, but they do also diferentiate in their style and taste. Nice preservation.

Well,these are iron ones

You mean all silvered but spikes? I don't think so. It may be that some had silver inlay as decoration near the top of the socket, though i don't have specific examples off hand. There is where most sarauters had decoration though and for some reason silver inlayed ones sound familiar to me.

PS. I don't think this is silver, but it could be if you wished?

Re: Spartan Spear - hoplite14gr - 06-10-2010

Laconian bronze spear blades.
British Archaiological School at Athens item 85, 1990 dated in late sixth cent.
Site of Zeus Messapaiaw at Tsakonia.

Most probably a few were carried by the Spartan troops in the 5th century.

Kind regards

Re: Spartan Spear - brennivs - tony drake - 06-10-2010

Thanks Giannis Big Grin another question what length and width are the spear heads and butt spikes also what is the average diameter of the sockets.
I am thinking Iron spear with a bronze butt spike.

Re: Spartan Spear - Giannis K. Hoplite - 06-10-2010

The sizes especially on spearheads vary so much that i couldn't tell you an average. It is unclear which kind of spearheads corresponds with the military spear, but it is possible that nearly all of them were used,in accordance with the shaft and the sarauter/tapper. Some spearheads are really tiny, but wider than some longer ones that are less than 5cm wide!
The socket of the spearhead is very often as narrow as 1,5cm,more often around 2 cm. That of the butt spike is usually a bit wider, around 2,5 -3 cm.
As you might have already understood, you will have to pick a spear and reproduce it,and then pick a kind of sarauter and reproduce it,because there seem to have been no rules. Decide where you want your spear to balance, and then pick the right combination of points.
The shaft itself could be either tappered or not. An untappered shaft should be less than 3 cm wide. Best is about 2,5 cm. Lenght,1,2 - 1,5 m would be fine. If your friend is a bit in the tall side, you might make it a bit longer. There is a thread discussing spear sizes these days.

I dont think there is anything particularly Etruscan about it. It is not far from these bronze heads form Olympia.
