imperialism in antiquity - eugene - 02-01-2010

Does somebody knows ant articles or books about ancient
theories, perceptions and attitudes to imperialism, defensive
and offensive wars, just and unjust wars and relations between small and great states?

There is this book by Garnsey and Whittaker, which has all the virtues and weaknesses of Cambridge scholarship of the Finley age. There was a review of a similar book in the Bryn Mawr Classical Review quite recently, but I cannot find it again.

Have you tried WV Harris's groundbreaking War and Imperialism in Republican Rome? You can read the introduction in the link and see if it fits what you are looking for. It is a bit dated, originally published in 1979 I think, but it really started a good academic discussion on this issue. Even very recently books have been published trying to refute Harris, such as Eckstein's 2006 Mediterranean Anarchy, Interstate War, and the Rise of Rome.
