A year late with this one, but definitely deserving of notice.
I was just refreshing my memory on the whole Roman frontier strategy debate when I discovered that Dick Whittaker, author of Les frontières de l'empire romain (1989), Frontiers of the Roman Empire: a social and economic study (1994), and Rome and its Frontiers (2004), had passed away last November. Besides his work on ancient trade and economy, he will be remembered as the translator of the Loeb Herodian (two volumes, 1969-70).
