Sibylline books - Epictetus - 09-06-2009

How were the Sibylline books used? The only method I can think of is by sortes, where a passage is picked at random and so fortells the future or what one should do. The above link thinks that this is how they were "probably" consulted, but this dates from 1875. Are there any new theories or new information about this?

The standard work on the Sibylline Books is H.W. Parke's Sibyls and Sibylline Prophecy (1988) -- you might find what you're looking for in there.
