Ancient Coins - DanM - 06-02-2009

Yes. I know I sort of disappeared for almost a year. On my birthday I got this thing called dirty old coins. It is this kit that has cleaning fluids, a brush, a software for identifying coins, a booklet on how to clean coins, and 5 uncleaned ancient coins. I know I should clean them because the dirt is still encrusted. However, I am afraid of accidentally stripping off the patina. Any advice on cleaning, or special tricks?

Ah, I received the same kit for my birthday. I'm still very much a newbie when it comes to cleaning the coins, but I've cleaned 3 out of 5 to a rather high degree (the other two are lost causes). All I can say is just begin very gently and gradually apply more pressure. I have gotten much more detail after just letting the coins soak in the liquid solution for days at a time. Good luck!
