Macedonian shield - Uwe Peltz - Peter Raftos - 05-10-2009

I was searching for info on the Baden Aspis when I was pleasantly surprised by this find. This gentleman is the real deal. A qualified restorer of metallic objects for museums. This page should have you drooling: [url:36qbjnk0]http://www.uwepeltz.de/pages/leistungen/archaeologie/schild/schild.html[/url]

Use google or babelfish to translate the page to the language of your choice. Of particular interest to me was the fact that woven papyrus is used as a buffer layer between bronze and wood. Enjoy!

Searching his page a bit further there are two PDFs on the restoration of an Apulian thorax.

Nice find! I've been searching for good photo of Pergamon shield.

I posted a thread about this shield a little while back and some info on its construction:

I was surprised to note the remains of papyrus as well. If you have access to it, he wrote an article available through JSTOR entitled "Der Makedonische Schild aus Pergamon der Antikensammlung Berlin" which goes into the details of the condition of the shield and its restoration (with lots of pictures).

Ruben,
I was in hospital when you posted your thread. Thanks for the reference.

It is also interesting that this fellow as a professional museum restorer has had the same problem in finding bronze sheets big enough. It seems he had to make the shield a tad smaller than the original.
