Patterns of weapons sent to Britain for production - Vadormarius - 01-15-2005
I was reading on the ERA web site that the Romans sent patterns of weapons to Britain for the local populace to copy in the year 400 A.D. What kind of weapon patterns were sent and what form did the patterns take (i.e. complete, partially complete in various stages, etc.)? The implication of this is that more complicated items such as swords and armor may have become less common in the 5th century, with a large number of soldiers being armed with no armor or swords, just spears and shields, not much different than their German rivals, at least in the remote sections of the Empire. My reasoning behind this is that the local craftsmen would not have the skills, tools, or materials to produce these items in quantity, especially when under pressure. <p></p><i></i>
