Eagle Standards/Aquilifer. - Vae_Victis - 02-19-2009

For purposes of love-of-history as well as re-enactment, where ay I be able to find the Eagle Standards and the Standard poles used by the Legions in and around the time of Scipio Africanus as well as Gaius Julius Caesar? Also do any of you know here i can find teh outfit for the "Aquilifer" ? Much help is needed and I thoroughly thank you! Big Grin oops:

Welcome on board. Hope you'll have a nice time here and enjoy re-enactment/interest in the Roman times.
Don't forget to put your real (first) name in your signature, as that's a forum rule. It's nice to know who you're talking to.

First, as you're question is about a little bit earlier times then the flavian Aquilifers I'm gonna discuss below, you should take into account that in earlier times the Roman army also seemed to have other standards. Maybe even every legion had it's own animal.

Re: Eagle Standards/Aquilifer. - QVINTVS ARTORIVS CORVINVS - 02-19-2009

It is bloody difficult to obtain wolf, even harder for bear, but how in the name of Zeus's butthole did he score lion????

In Canada, you cannot buy bear, in order to own it, you have to have a license and dispatch it yourself. As for wolf, after the massive, and very questionable wolf culling in the Yukon a few years back, there are severe restrictions on them as well.

Surely there is a reasonable faux animal provider out there somewhere?

The Eagles themselves are fairly hard to come by... you might want to try places that sell flagpole topper accessories.

For the armour, start at any of the vendors here, Soul of the Warrior, Imperium etc.

Ask a ZOO and just wait till one die and hope they'll sell the hide to you. In the mean time you can save some money to finance the project. That's at least the I heard they've got theirs.

I understand that David Richardson of Leg II AVG (UK) has another lion pelt for sale too at the moment!

Re: Eagle Standards/Aquilifer. - QVINTVS ARTORIVS CORVINVS - 02-19-2009

A weird thought popped into mind... I wonder if they (Aqualifers/Signifers) ever catch heat from animal rights activists?
Not sure how prevalent they are in the UK, but in North America, yikes

Honestly, If I shelled out the amount of quid I can only imagine it would cost, let alone the scarcity factor, and someone threw paint all over it... I think I would call an Ad Aciem, and re-enact the battle of Boudicca :!:

Re: Eagle Standards/Aquilifer. - Gaius Julius Caesar - 02-19-2009

Considering that wolves and cougers as well as bears, are now being spotted across the prairies, there must be some relaxation on the dispatching of the occassional animal?
Even the coyoties are coming into towns and making off with dogs and cats.
I wonder how long before a baby is taken?

Thanks for such a great reply. By the way my name is Nick. I live in the United States and have found myself deeply interested in the Roman Republic, but also the empire too. Ever since my Grand father came back from a dig in Baath with a bronze Roman ring for me. Anyway, I shall look into ths ites offered and i would thoroughly enjoy looking into this sort of re-enactment. For some reason the spirit of Rome calls me, and while Rome cannot be revived, in can be found in both heart through the virtues of old as well as in interest in history. Upon my searches I found that the Eagle standards were revived by Napolean, and yet none just as those from Rome, do not survive. Also, the pelts are rather extraordinary! Wow. I cannot wait to see mor eof this and I expect to log on more frequently!

In the USA Bear and Wolf pelts may be easily obtained:

wolf:

By the way, the wolves appear to all come from Canada (saved for export?)

I've encountered no problems (yet) from animal rights people when appearing in public wearing my bear pelt. Here I am as a cornecen at the recent Reenactor Fest that was held in Wheeling, IL:
