Scuta Blazons. - Doc - 10-14-2008
One RAT member graciously has a yahoo group with many scuta blazons.
However, I was looking for scuta blazons that are made of metal appliques. Does anyone have any pictures or links to groups/individuals that have scuta with metal appliques on them.
There is only one on the Legio XX website but it is too small.
Also the yahoo group mentioned above has one but some of the details are obscured by the scuta cover.
It appears that painted scuta were the norm however there is evidence of appliques that may have belonged to scuta (the silvered/tinned thunderbolts).
I have already chosen a blazon (wings, thunderbolts, and whirwinds) but I am still undecided as to what method I should display the blazon.
I know that the painted blazon will look excellent but I can say the same for the appliques.
The only reservations I have about the metal appliques is TOO MUCH METAL and it may look silly. I know that Romans liked to be "showy" and thus an all metal applique scutum would not be too out there. Bu then again who knows?
Any help, suggestions, comments, pictures etc.... would be appreicated

Dan Petersen (National Legion http://www.nationalromanlegion.com/index.php ) owns some Scuta with metal insignias which he brings to some events.

Some of the pieces appears to be leather yes?
The thunderbolts I would think are of iron?

Legio II Avg in the UK and Netherlands use metal appliqués ('S' shapes and capricornus)
