Getting a Scutum - Lucius Duccius Rufinus - 10-08-2008

hey folks,

Just wondering if i can pick your brains once more... Just curious where is the best place to get a Scutum Circa 80AD - 100 AD. my budget is about £100 - £150 for this I have found one for £120, but was wondering if there were any cheaper sites?

Cheers

Check out [url:31a76exf]http://www.armamentaria.com or [url:31a76exf]http://www.medieval-arms.co.uk. The second one also has an ebay show, where he sells his products at discount prices.

Or simply do it yourself. Will cost you some work and under 40 pounds.

thanks jvrjenivs, I'd LOVE to make my own tbh, and i'm just setting up my work shop to make my Segmenta, but realistically how easy is it to make your own Scutum? I think the actual making of the shield doesnt look too bad (did do some reading up on 'Molding / Pressing' the shield to shape it, but my painting skills are less than desirable.. and where can i get the brass / bronze outer sections to line the shield? (the bits around the rims) and would you recommend attempting to make my own shield boss or buying?

Cheers Smile

Re: Getting a Scutum - jvrjenivs - 10-08-2008

First you don't need to attach a brass rim. A rawhide one made out of inexpensive 'doggy-bones' is easy to add.
See www.fectio.org.uk/articles/makescutum.htm. I would say buy a umbo. It's a lot of work to do yourself, and need some skills.

About your painting skills. It's actually how difficult your design will be. And the designs of indian brands aren't that difficult ones. Making your own is cool and got your own design. And it's handcraft, so would you mind the design isn't perfectly painted? In (battle)line nobody will see that.

That's actually the same guy as the medieval-arms, but the german based shop. So shipping costs could be less if you use the UK based site.

Re: Getting a Scutum - Aurelianus - 10-08-2008

Hi Kevin

I would recomand you to buy this Scutum (available too by his u.k. shop medieval-arms, but at the moment not on his ebay shop medieval-arms)

So you can start very fast with your impression. Even when you once decide to make your own scutum, you could still use the brass rims (its a lot of work to make them by yourself). Already the brass rims are worth the price.

BTW: If you buy the Deepeeka Scutum I would change the umbo. I personally don’t like it.

Thanks Jurjen, this is news for me too!!

Re: Getting a Scutum - Gaius Julius Caesar - 10-08-2008

The deepeeka bosses are usually held on with screws or pop studs.

I plan on changing one to an armae umbo 55 - 60 Uero.

Yeh it does look rather nice! i think i might give making my own boss a bash (excuse the pun). we've all got to learn sometime huh?

jvrjenivs, have you made your own one before? what do you use for a Scutum press?

Re: Getting a Scutum - Gaius Julius Caesar - 10-08-2008

You will need to make one, although you could just strap it around an oil drum...

Be aware of that too simple solutions have its snares! If your scutum should work well the radius of the bend is limited at an upper bound and lower bound. If you take just an oil drum the radius will probably be to low (I know it from my own experience).

The first scutum I made I did just with ropes around a tree. For one time it worked, but when I had to make more scutum blanks I decided to make a press, as you can see on www.romanarmy.com/rat/viewtopic.php?p=137805#137805

If I had to make a press right know, I would change de design, I've to admit, and go for the design the Sean Richards (Leg IX HISP) uses. Couldn't find pictures that fast, but they must be somewhere on this board.
