Re: Show your subarmalis! - Paul Elliott - 04-28-2012

Mine is very similar, but stuffed with scrap wool cloth... and hand stitched .... Confusedhock:

I think I have a picture of it (very well worn beneath ringmail):

Quote:Here is my own subarmalis. It is stuffed with straw into tubes made by sewing the linen verticly. Unfortunately it is machine sewn so I kind of ruined the material authenticity. The pteruges are made of linen covering 1 layer of wool and are pretty crude. http://s896.photobucket.com/home/Conman10/index

Nice website Mithras.

Re: Show your subarmalis! - Paul Elliott - 04-28-2012

Thank you! I set it up to a) justify to myself all my kit choices, b) use it in the classroom as a follow-up to my Roman-day, and c) run it as a prototype for a book idea...

since i am planning on making one for myself: did all soldiers (legionaries and auxiliarys) wear a subarmalis, or was it just the regular legionaries?

Show your subarmalis! - Flavivs Aetivs - 10-09-2013

We don't know. They are shown in Roman art (usually indicated by pteruges) but none have actually been found. We assume most soldiers would have worn one, as you really can't wear a segmentata without one. Chainmail is more comfortable with one but is wearable without one.

@Antoninus

I love your subarmalis; looks very much like the style of one I want to make.

thanks for the quick reply

i will take my old gambeson from my first attempts at reenactment and just give it a shot in reworking it into a subarmalis

My LR subarmalis. Please disregard the balteus and the too long tunic.

Stitching made by machine, stuffing consists of a woolen blanket. Thickness is halfway between "not crying whilst getting blows on your hamata" and "looking sexy without armour".

I really like the detail of how you made it. However, don't you think that there should be more (layers of) pteryges?

Show your subarmalis! - Flavivs Aetivs - 10-09-2013

I wouldn't say your Tunic is too long, its about the right length. I actually got mine a little long so I could hike it up over my belt a bit, and also because I want to wear it a little long. The Balteus is believeable too.

Anyways, I love the way you did your subarmalis. That horizontal band in your quilting down the center of the subarmalis reminds me of 5th century depictions where they show the "varangian bra" looking thing on the chest.

Who made your Intercisa Helmets?

Show your subarmalis! - M. Val. Naso - 10-09-2013

MMFA:

The horizontal band is also present on the Mars-subarmalis carving. IDK if it is meant for making bending down easier, I don't have that kind of experience with these things, my first one was generally a thing to hide from the civilians, only wore it under armour.

Also, our helmets are made by a local blacksmith, 1.5 mm, we have 10-12 of them, most with a generic long cheekpiece and quite big neckguard, some with narrower ones, and a few with short, blocky ones (maybe Worms-type). All with embossed eyes, some with crescent moons too.

a little WIP picture of my subarmalis, which i am making of an old and useless leftover gambeson from my first days of reenactment...

[Image: 1391920_10201699177416978_1207362122_n.jpg]

i will change it from front opening to side opening, and give it edges of dark red fabric

i wont attach any pteryges since during my time as far as i know they were a officers only thing

Show your subarmalis! - Flavivs Aetivs - 10-21-2013

Whats it made of?

Show your subarmalis! - Hatzi - 10-21-2013

cotton, with linen optic
