Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - Hibernicus - 09-03-2008

Here are some photos of the occrea I taught Tiberius Nemonicus Agricola of Legio IX Hispana (USA) how to make. He's been a member for just about 1 year.

The metal is steel, 18g; hand rolled, hammered; hand drifted holes; tinned; with 4 exterior mounted hand made "O" rings in brass clips; the liner is composed of two layers of felted wool with a goatskin covering that was quilted together with waxed linen thread; with a binding edge of goatskin sewn on with waxed linen thread. The "ansata" was Agricola's idea.. afterall you have to be able to tell yours apart form someone else's!

Hibernicus, very nice Occrea youve made!,

Just curious about something, trying to start a roman re-enactment group up here in Aberdeen (scotland) for the Ninth hispana, as they were all the way up in Aberdeen, and fough a huge pitched battle Mons Graupius, just outside of Aberdeen.. However there appears to be very little documentation on the Ninths Emblem, Most place i read state it was a bull, but its only presumed (as the legion was raised by Caesar) However I have read others that state its a Boar, any information would be enlightening Smile

cheers
Lucius

And that's it! That's ALL we know.... and guess at. And was the TAURUS used as an emblem 100 years later?

There are also some coins showing a signum but they look like nearly every signum depicted on a coin..

Hibernicus, Thanks for your response, yeh what had me confused was a posting on http://www.yorkromanfestival.com/history.htm , here it seems state it did not become the emblem of York, who chose instead to keep the emblem of the founding Ninth Legion, the Boar (and is still used at the Imphal Barracks). which indicates to me that it could have been the boar in later years, but thats 2nd Century AD. there is a Reenactment group in york called "the lost legion" who are IX Hispana Reenactors also, ( http://www.yorkromanfestival.com/lostlegion.htm ) who have the boar on their Emblems... Just wondering Smile some extra input is always welcome.

Very nice occrea!

I've a little question:

How many weigh?

I say that because seems too thick.

Thank's Smile

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - Hibernicus - 09-03-2008

It weighs: 2.25lbs or 1.02kg

Snug fit.

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - A_Volpe - 09-03-2008

nice work! looks like it's fairly comfy to wear.

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - Nemonius Agricola - 09-03-2008

As for seeming thick. It might be the lighting I took the picture when the sun was going down so it might have some wierd shadows. Its just the right amount of padding for your shin. I feel fairly sure that it can take a good blow and I won't break my shin. As for the wieght you don't notice the occrea on your shin due to the snug fit it has.

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - Q. Vipsanivs Praetextatvs - 09-04-2008

It's possible, because seeing other photos seems more thin.

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - Nemonius Agricola - 09-05-2008

The measurement of the thickness is only 9mm or 3/8 of an inch. Not thick at all for armor with padding.

What guage steel...18? Also, how come the leather edging? I've never seen any occra with holes along the edge before.

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - le Cavalier Invisible - 09-05-2008

It's to sew the leather or other material.
In the archaeologic museum from Barcelona there is a pair of greaves with holes along the edge, I will search a picture.

Re: Occrea, Legio IX Hispana - Magnus - 09-05-2008

Ah, nice. I wondered if they didn't glue the backing on. That's what I've done on most of mine....though I imagine they could have done both.
