Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - Lucius Duccius Rufinus - 09-01-2008 Hey folks, I'm new to these boards, and just curious where does one source an animal skin / pelt for Roman Standard bears, do most reenactment groups use fakes? or are these just general road kill? Any help would be appreciated cheers Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - jvrjenivs - 09-01-2008 It's important to know where you live, as the rules differ from country to country. Also, the local Zoo can help you perhaps. (And I guess this also answer your question that most skins are real, not fakes). Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - Marcus Mummius - 09-01-2008 Valerinus, please add your real name to your signature, that is a forum rule. Also, this subject has been discussed here a lot. At the top of the page you can find a search button (second item at the top). Use this to look for 'bearskin' 'wolfskin' etc... and you will find a vast amount of information and dealers mentioned. vale, Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - Lucius Duccius Rufinus - 09-01-2008 jvrjenivs, Im from Scotland, UK.. So i guess the rules here might be rather strict when it comes to that kind of stuff! gutted! Marcus, Sorry about that, I have updated my signature. Hope thats what you were after? Thanks for your help Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - M. Demetrius - 09-01-2008 Start at a taxidermist, who can tell you all the rules in your area. Also, just google "Bear hides {your country}" and you should get some suppliers. And Mummius is right. You need to put your name in your signature , it is a forum rule and a good one with good reasons. Welcome here, and if you need help figuring out how to add a signature, Private Message me, and I'll walk you through. Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - Lucius Duccius Rufinus - 09-02-2008 Demetrius, Thanks for your help, Its ok i've got my name in my signature aswell as a banner for my legion thanks ) Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - Cheyenne - 09-02-2008 Hi Kev, I know of a few places you can get full animal skins, they are usually from the states - and will be from animals that are not included in the article 40 legislation on the transportation of products from endangered species.. The best place to start would probably be with the forestry service in Alberta & British Columbia - they have to cull some bears each year due to contact with people in the outback. They can also point you in the right direction for wolf pelts. Be casreful that they are not timberwolves however, as the difference between those and the non endangered common species isn't always recognisable... You will also need an export VET certificate for such items - best to consult their department of the interior... Canada is probably the best place to try as they have strict codes of conduct about the origins of their culled animals Hope this helps Claire Re: Animal Skin for Standard Bearers - Gaius Julius Caesar - 09-02-2008 Nice work on the banner Kevin, it looks great!
