My latest strip built Auxillia shield project - jkaler48 - 08-29-2008
Built with Birch (a relative of Alder which are three times the price) 3" strips
1/8" thick (next time I will try various widths) The shield is three layers and finished out at 5/8" thick at the edge because of the overlapping cloth layers. Used cotton drop cloth from lowes for the cover and red barn paint. This is my first pegged on reenforcing strips which worked well. (earlier shields I used copper roofing nails which tended to split the strips when clenched over) I make them 41" X 24" which is a good neck to knees size for under 68" tall reenactors including the grandkids (photo of earlier complete shields included)

John, did you use two layers or three?
Nice job. Canvas has a little different look from linen, but not enough that most folks would ever worry about it. And if they do, don't invite them in for mulsum and stuffed dates.

Three layers and around 1/2" thick before gluing on the canvas.
I am not going to try to use more expensive linen or leather until I get more
practice building these shields for the grand kids to use.

What's the weight of them?
An adult might need one a little larger, but not really that much, I guess. I've looked at wood strips at the lumber store. And veneer (very pricey, but nice looking wood).
PM me if you're looking for a less expensive linen, as I have a source that often puts odd lots of shirt weight linen on sale for decent prices. For a shield, it doesn't have to be very thick.
Of course, there's always the Goodwill stores' tablecloths. Doesn't really matter that much what color, since they get painted anyhow. A simple one of those might sell for two or three dollars, and should be enough for a front and back of a shield.

the boss arrives from DSC. I got 3/16" strips and planed them since I happen to have a planer. I got 36" X3" oak and birch strips for 1.00 each from
