Shielddesign of Classis Germanica - Marcus Mummius - 08-26-2008

Salvete,

Is there a shield design known that belonged to a soldier of the Classis Germanica?

Valete,
Falco

Nope. Nothing that even comes close.

Thanks, Jasper. Too bad Sad

One of our guys wants to put together a Classis Germanicus marine impression. I guess he'll have to improvise a bit then.

Vale,

One possibility is to include design elements found on any coins that are
attributed to the desired unit if such are known. It would represent a guess at best but better than no evidence at all.

Sadly, although naval themes certainly aren't lacking on coinage, the association with specific units only happens with legions and (iirc) the guard.

Just have to be imaginative(and nautical)

Re: Shielddesign of Classis Germanica - Tim Edwards - 08-30-2008

I dont think this is a massive problem.

The lack of evidence is not unusual!

I think that there are very few of us who can honestly put our hands up and say we have precisely copied evidence for our shield designs for our chosen unit. Even when evidence does exist, it is rarely straightforward and will always need a heavy amount of personal interpretation.

You can just about see our marine design here:

I'll see if I can find a better image.

Danger, Will Robinson!

Here:

It's based on a monument from Rome, possibly on the Arch of Constantine, though I might need to double check.

Seemed suitably naval, further evidence notwithstanding!

Beautiful design, thanks!

Re: Shielddesign of Classis Germanica - Praefectusclassis - 08-30-2008

That's from an adlocutio scene with Marcus Aurelius.

Re: Shielddesign of Classis Germanica - Jona Lendering - 08-30-2008

A double dolphin is shown on the Alteburg Monument too, and I vaguely recall a note in the museum in which they say that it was an emblem of the Rhine fleet.

Re: Shielddesign of Classis Germanica - M. Demetrius - 08-30-2008

It may not be the unit shield of some particular group or other, but there's no denying it looks entirely Roman. Very nice job!

Excellent art work! Who did it?
