And: Any measurements? Or reconstruction drawings?

Re: Scutum Covers (Tegimen) pictures? - Hibernicus - 07-30-2008

There's a very interesting discussion at RAG (Roman Army Group) on yahoo about scutum shape and size. Peterson and yours truly are having a right jolly dust up.

I've been surprised at how little readily available info there is on scutum covers.. especially pictures of the real thing.. some drawings: yes.

lol, I know, I read a few posts then realized the absurdity of wasting my time reading discussions involving certain people.

I hope you find your evidence Hib! Though it still may not convince the person on the other side.

The discussion on RAG may prove very beneficial.

I've been challenged and that's proven to be VERY beneficial.

So, if anyone has info to share on TEGIMEN it will be of great benefit

Carol van Driel-Murray is the best place to start when looking at reports on shield covers Sean.

I have a drawing of the Caerleon cover somewhere... Ah!.. here'tis

I think the problem with this discussion though Ade is that the other side of it is stating that is an auxlliary shield cover and not representative of a legionary's scutum dimensions.

From past and recent coversations, I believe that Peterson maintains that all extant scutum covers that are narrower than THE Dura semi-cylindrical scutum have to be for Auxilia shields and are also therefore flat.

I adjusted some of the photos

I notice that there does not seem to be a seam for the umbo dome section, that it appears to be one sheet of goatskin...

Nice photos Sean;
But without the measurement information not much help.
Then how does one determine if the leather shrank any in 2000 years?
I wonder why the photos didn't include a meter/yard stick?
I guess the photographers don't watch CSI Smile

Re: Scutum Covers (Tegimen) pictures? - Peroni - 08-01-2008

With regard to the Roomberg tegimen, (the one with the capricorns)

if you have a copy of the Carol van Driel-Murray article on the shield cover the shield cover is;

a. Large enough for a curved-face shield
b. Rounded at the top part
c. Clearly belonged to an auxiliary citizen cohort (Coh XV Voluntariorum)

The estimated size for the actual shield board (according to van Driel-Murray) would be in the region of 75cm wide - which would suggest that the board would have been curved to give a face of around 62cm.

75cm wide is a bit TOO wide to be a flat faced shield in my opinion.

To back up the use of round bosses on curve-faced shields, there is the boss found with the I- G -A at Nijmegen which is shaped to fit a curved shield, (H Brunsting and D C Steures - ARMA Vol. 3 No. 1 ISSN 0960-9172)

and another in the museum at Aalen of a very similar shape.

Wouldn't be funny if 1st C AD semi-cylindrical scutums for ordinary soldiers had round umbos and those three "fancy" rectangular backed umbos were for centurios or were special awards...
