Literature on the Praetorian Guard ? (preferably in English) - Theodosius the Great - 07-27-2008

Avete,

I know there are very few books dedicated solely to the Praetorian Guard written or translated in English. The only one I'm aware of is the Osprey one from 1994 which is quite outdated. But are there any others available in English ?

IIRC, the are many written in French and Italian.
Which are the best non-English books ?

Thanks in advance Smile

~Theo

Hi Theo,
Yeah, the Rankov book's it, as far as I know. Can't really say there are many in French and Italian. I know of two French ones and one Italian. One of the French books is fairly easy to find, the others are pretty much impossible to get outside of university libraries.

Hi,

There's a PhD thesis on the Praetorian Guard free to download here.

Jasper, which is the second French one? I know only about Durry (Les cohortes Pretoriennes)...

Greetings
Alexandr

Outdated? How so?

Apparently out of print.

I haven't seen any reviews. Have you?

Re: Literature on the Praetorian Guard ? (preferably in English) - Praefectusclassis - 07-28-2008

No, but it's in my bookcase. One day I might actually get around to reading it. Tongue Any aspects you'd like me to check?

BOOK - Graham Sumner - 07-28-2008

There is also

Arguin A.R.M. 2006: Pretorianos: La Guardia Imperial de la Antigua Roma. Madrid

I have a copy but our Spanish readers will give a better review than I can.

Graham.

And in German:

Stöver, H.D., Die Prätorianer (München 1994) 368p

Besides it's title I don't hold any information on this book or it's content.
Can somebody who read it give a short review?

Hans

It's quite some time ago that I read this book. It focused on the role of the Praetorian Guard at the times of certain Emperors such as Caligula, Claudius, Nero etc. It has some additional short information called Excurs about the Cursus Praetorianus, Sacrametum (oath of allegiance), equipment of the Praetorians etc. I liked the book.

Thanks Medusa for the review.

Are you going to the RAT conference in Mainz? It would be good to see you again.

Greets,

Hans

Laud awarded from me, Alexandr.

An overstatement on my part. But the author does refer to Fuentes' old tunic color theory from the late 1980s which no one on RAT subscribes to, afaik.

I recently heard anecdotes about how distinguished authors like Peter Connolly are unable to persuade publishers to publish updated editions of their work. Connolly's "Greece and Rome at War" was written over 25 years ago ! I was barely a year old Confusedhock:

In fact this book was re-released in a slightly revised edition by Greenhills only a few years ago.

When it first came out I was just a few years older than you Jaime!

Graham.
