I had concerns about Hollywood remaking a John Wayne film (hand on heart), judging from the trailer it appears that Jeff Bridges has done him justice though, of course a two minute trailer can be deceiving.

A remake of True Grit, eh? Another remake? Are there no original movies being done these days??? Hope there is a follow up to Solomon Kane as that was fab.
Also Jim Caviezel is apparently doing William Tell...hmm...how historically accurate is that going to be I wonder. Or do I mean hysterically accurate? :lol: I also wonder if he is going to cry in this one too...I can't think of any film of his I've seen when he doesn't shed a few tears.... :roll: ...even in The Prisoner...

Hollywood original? Nah, they have'nt done anything original since the original films that they are currently remaking.
I would like to see Solomon Kane, unfortunately it is not yet available on DVD in the U.S.

My wife and I started watching the 1945 version of Caesar and Cleopatra. While Vivien Leigh was cute as anything cavorting around on her pet sphinx, when the Roman soldiers appeared with their pompadour helmets, we went to bed laughing. Claude Rains did appear to be up to the part, but the whole thing just seemed comedic, with a totally bizarre series of dialog exchanges. We lasted about twenty minutes or so.
Imagine the Queen of Egypt playing alone in the desert at night, no cloak, no bodyguard or slave, or any kind of escort. Now imagine Julius Caesar walking up to her, wearing a toga, same desert, same night, no escort or bodyguard, no weapon. You begin to get the picture? Fun for a laugh, I'd say, though maybe the plot improved. Hard to know. Might come on again late one night and we'll venture further.

I saw it on an Amazon recommended list, and was attracted by the fact that the hero has the same surname as me! Then I found out that it was based on a Robert E. Howard story, and my interest grew. Add in Mark Anthony (Purefoy) from the series Rome, and I was definitely in for a purchase.
It's great - although I would agree a bit gruesome for a '15' - shows our age, Vindex! Look at the films which were '15' twenty years ago. IMHO, there's been a definite increase in the amount of tolerance of violence on our screens, big and small. No surprise really, is it?

Glad you enjoyed Solomon Kene, Ben, it is begging for a sequel!
Have been looking at something to cheer me up as my beloved dog died on Monday (pause for mournful sniff) and watched the Three Musketeers again - Michael York, Oliver Read, Richard Chamberlaine, Frank Findlay, Charlton Heston, Faye Dunnaway, Raquel Welch, Spike Milligan, Roy Kinnear and and and...When do you see a cast like that these days? And the script wirtten by George Macdonald Fraser (of Flashman fame) is witty, clever and brilliant. I LOVED it and laughed for the first time in days. Such a good, entertaining and funny movie.

And do not forget Christopher Lee in one of his best performances (he is actually very good a comedy).
The Three and Four Musketeers are a lot of fun, and the fight choreography is excellent. The rye sense of humor goes a long way to making it all seem just that much more honest a film (or films).
These are good candidates for Blu-ray. Now if they would receive the "Criterion Treatment" and were released on BD by Criterion ... that would be great.

Indeed - thank you for pointing it out. How could I forget Christopher Lee??!!! The duel in the second film is beautifully choreographed as you say.
I will be interested to see what the re-make will come out like. Mads Mikkelsen in in Lee's role and I think Orlando Bloom as D'Artangnan...I wonder if Mikkelsen can steal this film the way he did in 'Arthur'?
