Hey, it's a new RAT award - the golden chihuahua!!

BTW about the ESG..... The societies members do not get payed for their displays, the society itself does. just like the Gemina Project.

And about Dan: No Comment.

Re: "National Roman Legion" - Hibernicus - 07-28-2008

Bryan, we have plenty to share.

The National Legion..

Dan is blazing along with the idea. Cool.

His perserverence, his "style", has certainly bolstered our numbers and has energized Legio IX!

This post has been removed by the author. I do not see a point to being on a forum where moderators such as Matt Lanteigne aka Magnus can practice harassment and hypocritical behavior. RAT seems to have slipped into a place where people of this ilk can do or say whatever they want AND since he's a moderator, I guess it's all okay w/ the forum owners. Good luck, but I am done here.

Re: "National Roman Legion" - Gaius_Calvus - 07-28-2008

Folks,

I have been monitoring this thread, and all I would ask is that we stop the ad hominem attacks.

Discussing the merits of a "national legion" is the topic at hand.

Discuss the idea, not the individual, please.

Regards,

Edge

Marsh,

I was not referring to your comments, but to the one you quote in your post above.

I know Dan and both like and respect him; I believe that his idea has some merit, but will not suit the needs of the local group I represent.

All I was posting was a friendly reminder that we need to avoid ad hominem attacks, of which you are not guilty. Smile

I did not threaten anyone, nor did I mention locking this thread. I think that it merits discussion since it is a very relevant topic.

The best way to get 5000+ of us together is to have a budget!!! and a two to three year notice of the event. then it might be possible.

Leave Dan out of the equasion, he is a perculiar man but has done a lot in the beginning of re-enactment, and do not forget his help with the Deepeeka clan.. (of course having a stake in the company)

I have had my fights with him and my beers... either lock it or go on serious about our dreams to one day be able to field one legion for real!

I think an interesting idea would be to have perhaps a gathering every 3-4 years or so, as you mentioned, much like the Olympics or so, with the dates, groups involved, budget and location set well ahead of time and agreed on by a representative of each group. Like a triumph, or those mass drills performed at the Hypika Gymnasius (I know that is incorrectly spelt, but forgive me for that)

The time frame means there is plenty of time to improve upon the previous year's perfomance, to evaluate and interpret recent findings and discoveries and enable their reconstruction for re-enactment purposes, and if there is to be 'conformity' I don't think 4 years is too little time to sort out a red tunic and red painted sctutum for those involved. The colour read is chosen solely because it is the colour the public recognises most, but when any other time each individual group can parade as they see fit.

An event of that scale, and every four years also gives plenty of time for the public to organise and plan ahead. A display of 5000 armour clad roman soldiers surely is an event worth seeing!

Maybe a leg in Europe and then America would also not be so bad. I just don't like the idea of a 'National' 'Roman Re-Enactment group' per se as I think it stiffles the creativity, variety and limits other groups' participation, which is why I think a gathering is more suitable and achieves the same effect anyway.

My 2 cents.
