Ribchester Roman Festival 12/13 July - John Conyard - 07-06-2008

Leg II Augusta and some members of Comitatus will be at the Ribchester Roman Festival next weekend. Comitatus will be doing early and late Imperial Roman cavalry displays with some new bits of equipment on display.

Ribchester - derek forrest - 07-14-2008

Pete Johnson; Ethan his grandson and I visited this on Saturday in rather cold and overcast weather for what is Lancashires one and only reenactment event.
John and his Comitatus put up a fine display with 5 late cavalrymen and plumbata flying in all directions.
We did not see a display by the Augusta who were not in as many numbers as 2 years ago. However Ethan and I were enthralled by Cockney John's Medicus and as we were leaving David was getting his artillery ready for displays on Sunday.
We finished off with a visit to the excellent museum; well preserved grannary and the sadly delapidated bath house.

Thanks to Patrick and his committee (excellent sausages) for an entertaining afternoon.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the show. Pictures can be viewed at

The weekend was certainly eventful. But ultimately very enjoyable. It was the first time Comitatus have done a 1st century cavalry show under our own banner, but it will not be the last.

Working with the II Aug. was very easy and great fun.

Well done Paul III for getting the photos to work!

One of our Committee members had an ambition to ride in to Ribchester, dismount using an old stone dismounting block, tie his horse up using a Roman column, and purchase a drink. On Saturday night this seemed possible, and a good alternative to Sunday morning drill practice.

In practice D-Day may have taken less planning. We needed the right saddles with the correct riders on the right horse. We needed the horses next to their chums in the column. We needed scouts to stop traffic in front and behind the column. On arrival we filled the limited car park. We also closed three access roads. We had a very quick drink. I was asked very definitely not to ride my horse into the bar. I was very relieved to get back to the arena without been arrested or trampling anybody.

But the photos are good.

His name is Billy Bear and he belongs to my 6 year old's school class. He goes away on holidays etc. with the kids. Photos of Billy were taken over the weekend and one or two are on the events pages. Billy got to ride horses, play with a ballista, etc etc. My favourite is of Billy chained up with a slave notice around his neck.

Normally people like the horses. Most certainly don't care about the equipment.
