Sources for the Mamertines? - john m roberts - 06-26-2008

I find myself intrigued by those prize troublemakers of the western Med, the Mamertines. They are usually described as a pack of scruffy mercenaries who set themselves up as a minor power in their own right, then stirred the pot by inducing wars among the Macedonians, Carthaginians and Romans. Are there any good, accessible studies of this disreputable bunch?

I had the chance to find only a book, but it is in Italian:
"Mamertini Storia e Monetazione" - Mamertines History and Coinage; I suppose that the main aim of the study is coinage, however.

Here the link to buy an used copy:

Since the Mamertini were Campanian mercenaries, you may try to find books on the ancient "Campani" in general, which may include also some references to the Campanian mercenary forces employed in Sicily.
