I might do that! Big Grin Send me your address...

What are the measurements of the bottom picture?

Re: plumbata - Robert - 05-03-2010

Will do! Piece is about 18 cm, so that one turned out too long, I'm afraid. Plumbata are a pain!

Re: plumbata - M. Demetrius - 05-23-2010

That looks great, Robert. You might be able to make a tool called in English, "holdfast", which takes the place of a helper to hold the stock while you use your hands for the cutter and hammer.

There's lots of types, like the one I once sent you a picture of once upon a time...the foot-powered one.

Re: plumbata - Robert - 05-24-2010

Thanks! I do have one of those, but need to cut a V notch or something into it, as these plumbata have no wider the 0.5 cm stems and are really shifty little buggers. And an afternoon of forging should be good for Robert.

Just heat the business end of it, and fold it over a piece of square stock. It should work for round rod pretty well that way, if you keep the size right.... Idea

Re: plumbata - Robert - 05-25-2010

Ah, yes, sorry there, I indeed was thinking of giving it a "hot treatment" when I mentioned "cut". Thanks!

Can't recall whether this image was shown before, but the excellent website of the Munich State Library has a digital document containing not just the Notitia Dignitatum (different colours than the usual one used from the Bodleien Library), but also the pages of De Rebus Bellicis, which shows the only image of a plumbata:

http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db ... .174.98.30

Different colors here, too, and an imperfect text, but nice to show I think.

During our artillary display at Binchester, while throwing the Plumbata the lightest one did this Big Grin At first it looked like it had hit a stone and jumped up a foot or so until we went to retreve;
As you can see it went straight through this piece of branch
This did not even split the wood it punched straight through Big Grin

This one I found in the workshop and had just quickly fletched it up as one broke during the weekend display Sad
Just needed to share Big Grin
Regards Brennivs Big Grin

Re: plumbata - Robert - 07-29-2010

I forgive you the fletching! Great show, these things do pack a lot of whallop, for sure! Thanks for sharing Big Grin

Re: plumbata - M. Demetrius - 07-29-2010

Something like that could hurt a guy!

Weapon/armor specifications are always something I am looking for. Sad
Does anyone have even a basic list of anything?

May I add another question?

How was it thrown? I am assuming over arm, but assumptions being the mother etc...

Very interested to see the "punch" and that the wood hasn't split at all. It would certainly bring tears to the eyes...
