Re: RMRS events - John Conyard - 06-13-2008

I enjoyed the pictures. It's good to see other peoples impressions. I could cope with the "funny" comments on the website. Up to the point when the sheepskin glued to the internal faces of the cavalry shields was described as "experimental archaeology".

Let me make clear the English Heritage riders, Mark and Adam are great jockeys. They are able to dress up and ride in many different periods. They freely admit they stuck the sheepskin on the shields to make the shields more comfortable to carry against the leg. And they use internal strapping to carry the shields on the forearm. Such internal strapping does make it easier to use the reins.

I appreciate there is some sculptural evidence for such strapping. But no archaeological evidence. And frankly you don't need the sheepskin covering, or the internal strapping. Life is harder without them, but you just need to practice more.

I hope this message doesn't come over as a negative one. But when I see pictures of Roman cavalry I get all excited!

Nice..

A plumbatum?? Oi!

Quote:Unit rivalry:
Bad enough that legionaries had to bear the indignity of serving alongside unwashed non-Roman yokels from the far side of nowhere. But to have some bloody Batavians start cracking jokes at the expense of a valiant Roman legionary, surely that’s too much!

Brilliant!! Big Grin

Re: RMRS events - Ceannt - 06-16-2008
