Gaius Petronius Arbiter - Gaivs Antonivs Satvrninvs - 05-02-2008

Last night on tv I watched "Quo Vadis" (again) and was wondering about the character Petronius. In the film, he seemed a very wise fellow and eventually committed suicide. Does anyone have any concrete info on him? My online searches revealed nothing other than MAYBE he was the author of the Satyricon.( Please forgive me for not checking with Livius.org first).

He's mentioned in Tacitus and is probably identical to the author of the Satyrica a.k.a. Satyricon. If I recall correctly, Quo Vadis offers an accurate portratyal. The Wiki is too optimistic about the identification of the courtier to the writer.

Thanks, Jona. (I did check your site right after I posted this but didn't see anything there).
