Allard Pierson Museum, Amsterdam - Praefectusclassis - 05-05-2004

Today I walked into the Allard Pierson museum in Amsterdam by accident and wholly unprepared. Lo and behold: two Roman tombstones, small ones, in the Egyptian section. Seem to be late Roman by their style.
Now, the next time I go to Amsterdam, I'll surely go there with a camera, but in the meantime, maybe someone else can?
Greets
Will wonders never cease? Tombstones seem to be dropping from the sky these days, first in Alexandria for me and now Amsterdam for Jasper! Good on you, Jas.
Hi Jasper i'm not from Amsterdam but from nearby Leiden (also in the Netherlands ) so if you ever need some info from the "museum van oudheden" for instance i can be maybe of some help.Btw the museum is preparing a exposition of the "castellum Matilones". I keep you informed if you want.

Jasper how can you accidently walk into a museum???

but I know what you mean about being prepared [or not]

work sent me to Birmingham for a couple of days...........no point in taking me camera there I thought.
Work ended a bit early so popped into the local museum and found a small Roman section - including a very nice phallic piece with an eagle on it.........................now where was my camera??? argh

a few weeks later I get sent to York............hurrah! take camera and what happens............we end at 5.30 each day and the museum closes at 5
Re: Allard Pierson Museum, Amsterdam - Praefectusclassis - 05-06-2004

About the same way as you did Mark. On the train for a meeting, they called me if it could be three hours later, so I decided to kill some time in Amsterdam. Having never been to the Allard Pierson, I went there.
They also had what may have been a cavalry helmet's skull.
Greets
Oh, the irony of it! The guard tower opens on the 16th to be attended I have no doubt by Robert in fourth century kit, and I will be needed to do my once a year fourth century presentation in Peterborough that weekend.
Hi Crispvs,

Alas! I can't attend either (my wife celebrates her birthday), but my freind Chariovalda will be there. No doubt the bulk of Gemina and Corbvlo will be there as well, so if you want to see the new burgus, please come and join them!
