Masada VIII - Andrew Brozyna - 03-30-2008

Has anyone here seen a copy of Masada VIII published by the Israeli Exploration Society? I have been eagerly waiting to read the article, "The Military Equipment from Masada," G.D. Stiebel and J. Magness. Yet, it seems the only public library in the US that holds a copy is Harvard! I NEED to know what was written about the shield found there!

Here's the ISBN: 978-965-221-067-8

Re: Masada VIII - Gaius Decius Aquilius - 03-30-2008

This sounds like a not to be passed up report. I will see if my wife can order it, (B&N) and if she can't get it... Ancient World Books, as listed here on RAT, has been very good about getting things that are hard to get. I/You/We might drop Shal a note. I will send you a PM if I get an availability on this through a local source.

R. Izard
who also needs to know about the shield found there...

Re: Masada VIII - Historylover - 03-30-2008

Would you mind sharing a little more about the shield? TIA and all the best, Jon

Andrew (and everyone else for that matter),

It ain't available in the US, according to the B&N computer system.
I tried...

Re: Masada VIII - Andrew Brozyna - 03-30-2008

I found it is sold in the US by Oxbow Books. Until recently I thought the entire book was about military finds. I'd rather not buy an expensive monograph for just one article. I'm hoping someone here could say something about the description of the shield(s). They are supposed to be painted, but I don't know how complete or visible the designs are.

Hi Andrew check your PM

Re: Masada VIII - sulla felix - 04-04-2008

I believe Guy Stiebel is a member of RAT - I certainly remember seeing some posts from him a few months back? Maybe a PM to him might help?

Re: Masada VIII - sulla felix - 04-04-2008

Check the thread below for Guy's posts on the publication of the report:

Re: Masada VIII - Guy Stiebel - 04-12-2008

Dear Andrew

Fragments of some ten boards. Only one painted fragment - Crimson red. No designs!

Guy Stiebel

Re: Masada VIII - Andrew Brozyna - 04-12-2008

Thanks, Guy. No designs, rats! Can you say if it is casein paint? Encaustic?

I still can't find a copy in any library near me. My book-buying bug has returned to me, so I may get a copy from Oxbow.

Thank you for writing up these Masada finds! I read an article lamenting the end of archaeology. I thought, "Forget new excavations, you guys need to study the stuff that has already been found!"
